Treating major podiatric disorders
Onychomycosis
It is a fungal infection that mainly affects toenails as they are the most exposed to heat and moisture. The infection occurs with maceration of the keratin, which generally takes on a yellowish colour. The laser creates a photo-therapeutic effect on the nail, consisting of laser light and progressive heating at high temperature, which eliminates the nail fungus.
Morton's neuroma
Morton’s neuroma consists of a thickening of the interdigital nerve due to perineural fibrosis, i.e. the formation of fibrous scar tissue.
The cause of this fibrosis is friction on the nerve of the metatarsal bones. Usually Morton’s neuroma is localised in the interdigital space between the third and fourth metatarsals, as the metatarsal bones are more mobile at this level.
Less frequent is the localisation between the second and third metatarsals, while localisations in the remaining interdigital spaces are rare.
Laser therapy is used to reduce pain under the foot (antalgic purpose) and to reduce inflammation due to friction on the nerve of the metatarsal bones (anti-inflammatory purpose).
